Welcome to our new Arrivals!

We love new guests at Badwell Ash Holiday Lodges and so we are delighted to welcome not one but two sets of new arrivals!
Our Greylag geese are back for the third year running and this year hatched 7 little goslings, although now growing at a rapid rate of knots grazing on the grass at the back of the grounds behind Woodpecker Lodge, closely watched by proud mum and dad.

And just yesterday we watched as 3 little Canada geese hatched too. They are impossibly cute and fluffy, and a surprising yellowy green in colour. The female Canada goose does all of the incubating, sitting more or less without leaving the nest for 28 days. The male protects the nest from predators such as crows and stoats, and sees off any rival male geese.

The goslings will stay with mum and dad most of the rest of the year, learning to fly once their feathers have fledged in 8-10 weeks, and reaching adult size in around 3 months. At this point the family bond will start to loosen and the youngsters will start to move off to new territories.

Whereas Canada and Greylag geese do migrate between UK and Iceland/Greenland, most of the UK populations are now resident owing to mild winters, abundant food and stable water bodies.
These new arrivals have put the finishing touches on what is turning out to be a wonderful Spring here. The weather had been fabulous with barely any rain since March. The birdlife is spectacular, and the plants, shrubs and trees are bursting into life. And the fishing has been good with a few twenty pounders caught so far this season. Come and see us soon!
